Mazda CX-30: Where Does It Fit in the Mazda Lineup?
Mazda has welcomed a new crossover to its lineup at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. This comes as no surprise as car buyers seem to love crossovers. Interested buyers though, must wait until 2020 to drive it home themselves. This vehicle fits perfectly right in between the CX-3 and the CX-5. With this placement you’d expect it to bear the nameplate CX-4, right? Hold onto your hats, we’re about to break some news to you because it’s the CX-30. Are you a little confused? Are you wondering why Mazda wouldn’t just go with the CX-4? Believe it or not, there’s an explanation for it. There already is a Mazda CX-4 that was unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show in 2016 and it’s exclusively sold in China. Mazda spokesperson Drew Cary went on to say, “But while the CX-30 slos is nicely between the CX-3 and CX-5 in most dimensions, Mazda gave it a distinctive name because it’s an all-new vehicle with features not yet available on others in the lineup and the first of the CX models to adapt to the new Kodo design.”
Now that we figured out the name discrepancy, let’s talk about the Mazda CX-30’s specs and features. The new CX-30 is available in five trims; SE-L, SE-L Lux, Sport Lux, GT Sport, and GT Sport Tech. The base-level trim is equipped with standard equipment such as LED headlights, heads-up display, and radar cruise control. Other available options are leather seats, Bose Premium speakers, 360-degree camera, heating steering wheel and more! One feature that we love is the driver monitoring system that detects fatigue by using a camera and an infrared LED to monitor how wide the driver’s eyes are open at any given time, the number of times they blink, and the face’s angle. It emits audible and visual warnings if it detects the driver falling asleep.
Mazda hasn’t released technical specifications, but it is noted that the CX-30 was developed to offer a variety of four-cylinder engines. One is a 2.0-liter equipped with cylinder-deactivation technology that turns the four into a two-cylinder under light load conditions, like when cruising the highway. Both units receive a hybrid boost to increase fuel economy and performance.
At the Geneva Show, execs said that the CX-30 will hit the European market sometime this summer and that it would come to the United States after that- more than likely by the end of the year.
