Mazda Brand Leads in Reliability According to Consumer Reports

When looking for a new car this season, you may be wondering about the reliability of certain auto companies. Are Mazda Vehicles Reliable?

At an online meeting of the Automotive Press Association of Detroit in November, the 2020 rankings for the Consumer Reports 2020 Auto Reliability Survey were released. Traditionally, Lexus and Toyota come out on top, but this year, Mazda won top honors as the most dependable auto brand in the survey for 2020. 

Named the winner for the first time in the survey, Mazda beat out many other competitors from the survey this year, which included Consumer Reports organization members who own more than 300,000 vehicles from model years between 2000 to 2020. Because it ranked as the number one brand for the most reliable new cars in the annual auto reliability brand analysis, Mazda reliability is definite, whereas competitors like Tesla and Lincoln ranked in the last two places respectively out of 26 brands included in the report. 

The Mazda reliability rating was derived by receiving a total average score of 83 points on a one-hundred-point scale. The report defines the ranking scale as “based on the average predicted reliability score for vehicles in the brand’s model lineup.” Most other brands receive an average ranking of between 41 and 60 points. So, the answer to the question, “Are Mazda’s reliable?” is resoundingly yes. 

Most Reliable Mazda Vehicles

While the report tells us vehicles from the brand are reliable in general, it also provides specific reliability scores for particular vehicles in the brand’s lineup. At the top, the Mazda Miata reliability was the best of the entire brand, earning 98 points. After that, the lineup reliability rankings include: 

• Mazda CX-30: 95 points
• Mazda CX-3: 87 points
• Mazda CX-5: 85 points
• Mazda CX-6: 80 points
• Mazda CX-9: 70 points

With dozens of new models released in the past year, many brands have been reshuffled with redesigns and less-experienced vehicles. In fact, Consumer Reports said nearly half of the new models have much worse than average reliability. 

For the Japanese automaker, earning the honor of the top sport was thanks in large part to its powertrains. These use solid and durable 6-speed automatic transmissions, whereas continuously variable transmissions are generally more fragile. Additionally, Mazda does not rely on overly complicated multimedia systems, instead opting for operation using thumbwheels on the center console that can be done without the driver having to take their eyes off of the road. Because of this, Mazda vehicles are generally less susceptible to some of the inadequacies and inconsistencies other competing car brands experience.
