The Mazda3 Wins in the J.D. Power Comparison Against the Honda Civic

Mazda3 2021

Because it’s been around for so long, the Honda Civic is a well-known vehicle. Some may believe it’s a good, safe choice over other vehicles you may know less about. When it comes to buying a car though, it’s best not to rely on assumptions. Instead, take the word of J.D. Power, one of the most well-known consumer intelligence companies. According to a J.D. Power comparison, the Mazda3 beats out the Honda Civic on pricing, features, safety, and just about everything else. With this recognition, now is the time to check out Mazda3 lease options at your Mazda dealership

Driving Experience

Both the Honda Civic and the Mazda3 serve customers looking for a sportier driving experience, but there are important differences between the two vehicles. The Mazda3 is more overtly athletic, while the Civic can be clunky and hard to control. With the optional turbocharged engine, the Mazda3 brings the athleticism to a whole new level. In addition, it has some of the richest interior furnishings you’ll find anywhere.

Performance and Efficiency

While the Civic only offers two engine options, there are three available engines with the 2021 Mazda3. The first is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 155 HP and 150 lb.-ft. of torque. The next level is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with an impressive 186 HP and 186 lb.-ft. of torque. Finally, the most thrilling engine is the Mazda3 2.5 Turbo that generates a whopping 227 HP and 310 lb.-ft. of torque.

In terms of fuel economy, the Civic underwhelms while the Mazda3 provides a combined city and highway driving rating of 31 mpg on the base sedan. Mazda3 mileage varies as you move up the engine levels and add front wheel drive (FWD) or all wheel drive (AWD).

Safety Features

Similar to the Civic, the Mazda3 has a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. However, while the Civic only earned the Top Safety Pick designation from IIHS, the Mazda3 was awarded a Top Safety Pick+ honor for its advanced driver assistance and safety features.

The Mazda3’s collection of advanced driver assistance systems is called i-Activsense and comes standard in all 2021 Mazda models. Including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, i-Activsense adds standard blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning systems on the 2.5 Select trim level, as well as adaptive headlights and traffic sign recognition on the Premium and Turbo Premium Plus levels.

Infotainment and Technology

The Mazda3 accessories can’t be beat. All 2021 Mazda 3 sedans come with an 8.8-inch widescreen infotainment display perched elegantly atop the dash. The Civic only offers a 5-inch touchscreen infotainment interface.

The Mazda3 base model comes with Bluetooth, text messaging capability, HD radio, Pandora, two USB inputs, and eight audio speakers. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are added to the 2.5 S sedan.

Additionally, the Mazda 3 2.5 Premium and both Turbo trims upgrade to a 12-speaker Bose audio system and add a 3-month satellite radio subscription. The 2.5 Premium and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus have a factory navigation system and a 3-year subscription to SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link.
