How Mazda Built a Better Miata Engine

Mazda Miata

The Mazda Miata is back and ready to release a 2019 model coming soon! With each new model year, Mazda continues to build an even better Miata. So what’s new for the 2019 Miata? Check it out here first from us at Mazda of Orland Park.

The 2019 Mazda Miata has an all-new engine that adds 26 more horsepower than the previous model and makes the rpm higher by 700 for the grand total of 181 horsepower and 7500 rpm. So how do they do it? The managing engineer for Mazda in North America said in a presentation that, “If you want to make more power in your engine, you get more air into it” Dave Coleman goes on to add, “So, everything that the air touches on the way through the engine is better.”

How do they do it? First off, the throttle body’s diameter is 5mm bigger than previous Miata models before, and the shaft running through the middle is 2mm smaller. In the end, it makes the flow area a huge 28 percent bigger.

Exhaust valves are larger with the 2019 model as well. Coleman mentioned in the same presentation that Mazda has basically the same exhaust manifold as before, but with a larger radius primary and secondary tubes to help better improve the flow.

All of the changes to the 2019 Miata’s engine are designed to help give the 2.0 liter the same feel as the 1.5, but with a smoother power. A handful of improvements to the combustion process were also put into place for the 2019 Miata. Mazda has done it again, taking a great car and turning it even better with a new model year!
