SkyActiv-X Engine Won’t Cost More to Service

Mazda SkyActiv-X

Have you heard that Mazda’s new SkyActiv-X engine would cost more to repair? Well, fret not! In an interview with Cars Guide, Eiji Nakai, Mazda’s powertrain manager, said the new engine wouldn’t require more servicing or cost more to repair when compared to a traditional gasoline engine. According to Nakai, Mazda worked to ensure its SkyActiv-X engine would operate as a conventional engine.

Mazda’s all-new 2.0-liter four-cylinder SkyActiv-X engine combines spark-controlled ignition used in most if not all gasoline-fueled vehicles and compression ignition found in a diesel engine to improve power and efficiency. The new ignition is intricate with Mazda adding new pressure sensors to each cylinder. These sensors were added so that the engine’s computer can get the necessary pressure feedback.

Spark Controlled Compression Ignition, which is what Mazda calls the new ignition process, puts more strain on the engine than a standard petrol engine. Since it puts more strain on the engine, Mazda had to thus find a way to strengthen the engine. It’s important to note that the SkyActiv-X shares no similar parts with the SkyActiv-G engine. With this new ignition process, according to Mazda, the engine produces 177 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque. Mazda also says that this new engine could improve fuel efficiency by 20-30 percent!

The complexity of the engine comes in fact from the software and sensors needed to keep the ignition controlled. New technologies often worry consumers, but the reps at Mazda are here to set these consumers right and reassure them.
