Could There Be a EV & Hybrid Option in the Works for the New Mazda CX-30?

Mazda CX-30

The Mazda MX-30 leads the brand with three powertrains, new design language, quirky barn-style doors, and eye-opening new interior materials. This SUV, like the CX-30, perfectly combines the best that Mazda has to offer with some new experimentation.

The all-new MX-30 is the company’s first-ever electric vehicle with its first-ever rotary-engine range-extender setup. In addition to the Mazda EV 2020, the third powertrain option includes a Skyactiv gasoline hybrid. The MX-30 and CX-20 shared several similarities, such as having the same wheelbase, length, and width, meaning the CX-30 could be soon getting an electric vehicle and hybrid option. While the “CX” naming refers to Mazda’s SUV lineup, both the “CX” and “MX” models are developed to push the brand’s design concepts in challenging new directions.

Mazda has given the MX-30 a unique global launch program, signaling its plans to introduce some splashy new vehicles in spectacular settings in the future. The electric version of the MX-30 was released in Europe this past summer, and the hybrid Mazda CX-30 was introduced in Japan in October. Some of the versions, such as the rotary range extender, are not expected to be available until 2022.

Interior

On the interior, the MX-30 includes rear-hinged free-style back doors, as well as natural, sustainable materials, such as cork and breathable fabric upholstery made from recycled plastic bottles. Of course, the inclusion of the cork elements subtly nods at the company’s origins in making cork over 100 years ago. Adding to the premium experience, the interior is outfitted with new three-tone upholstery for each of its five seats and two 7-inch touchscreens.

Electric

For the electric MX-30, Mazda focused on minimizing power usage by adding a batter that offers a range of 124 miles, as determined by the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure. The WLTP tests the levels of pollutants, CO₂ emissions and fuel consumption of traditional and hybrid cars, as well as the range of fully electric vehicles. Mazda believes these batteries enable drivers to travel the necessary distances of their day-to-day lives while also reducing the carbon dioxide emissions compared to larger batteries.

With both the 156-horsepower 2-liter gasoline hybrid engine and the 143-horsepower 35.5-killowhat-hours electric vehicle engine, you’ll feel its excellent handling and throttle that produces a smooth acceleration. With impressive speed, the electric vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 62 mpg in 9.7 seconds, while the hybrid does it in closer to 9 seconds.

While the electric version offers front-wheel drive, the gasoline hybrid MX-30 offers both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. Still, the electric MX-30 includes smart brake regeneration, which features five levels to choose from via a pair of steering wheel paddles.

It seems like customers will have to wait to find out if there is a new electric vehicle and hybrid option in the works for the Mazda CX-30, but with the innovations being made with the MX-30, it looks likely that Mazda will be offering similar options for the CX-30 very soon.
