Mazda Is Working On New SkyActiv-X Engines

Mazda doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down engine development. Mazda is developing a new straight-six engine that will use its revolutionary SkyActiv-X spark controlled compression-ignition technology. The Japanese car makers announced the new six-cylinder powertrains during a recent investor conference. These new engines will be used in both rear and all wheel drive models.

A spokesperson from Mazda said, “We’re excited to bring these powertrains to our future vehicles as we continue on our path to premium. We know our fans will be yearning for additional details, however specific models, performance figures and market rollout will be disclosed at an appropriate time.”

This is a clear move of Mazda trying to enter the more premium segments of the market. These new plans will have the engines positioned longitudinally and also compatible with mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid technologies.

Straight-six engines are making a comeback; in fact, Mazda is joining some higher-end premium vehicles such as Mercedes and Jaguar. Mazda hasn’t released a timeline for when to expect these powertrains yes, but keep an eye out for these! More information will be released in the near future.
